Odin is a windows only utility software that is developed and used by Samsung internally with its devices. Odin can be used to flash a Custom Recovery firmware image (as opposed to the Stock recovery firmware image) to any Samsung Android device. It is also used as a method of unbricking an Android device which has been bricked by the user, while flashing custom ROM or any other way.
Samsung did not officially released Odin, there is no account of Samsung actually releasing it. It is believed that Odin has come in the hands of outsiders as the result of an unintentional leak from within the Samsung employees.
Odin is designed to run on windows and windows only and it provides no support for any other operating systems. However, it is possible to run Odin on OS X after using Wineskin on the Odin executable.
You can flash a Custom Recovery firmware image (as opposed to the Stock recovery firmware image) to any Samsung Android device or any android device in general using Odin on PC.
You can also use Odin to unbrick any android device using a PC.
